Ellora and Ajanta

Ellora, known locally as Verul and mentioned as Elapura in medieval literature, is a group of 34 rock-cut caves in the Satpuda mountain ranges, about 30 km from the city of Aurangabad, in Maharashtra, India. It is the only rock complex where the rock temples of all the major religions of ancient India are located, namely Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism.

It seems that the site has throbbed with artistic activity for over 500 years (from the 5th to the 11th century AD), mainly under the patronage of the Kalachuri, Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties and also the Bauddha sanghas.
